Glossary#

Math is a massive area of study and it can be difficult to remember all the different terminology that we use throughout the different branches. As I was creating the website, I realized that it might be incredibly valuable to have a glossary of the different words and their exact meanings.

EquationSome test definition to fill space
AdditionAddition is the process of combining two numbers into a single number.
SubtractionSubtraction is the process of taking one number from another to produce a new number.
MultiplicationMultiplication is the process of combining two factors into a single number.
DivisionDivision is the process of dividing a whole number by another whole number.
AlgebraA branch of mathematics dealing with symbols and the rules for manipulating those symbols.
GeometryA branch of mathematics concerned with the properties and relations of points, lines, surfaces, solids, and higher dimensional analogs.
CalculusThe mathematical study of continuous change, in the same way that geometry is the study of shape and algebra is the study of generalizations of arithmetic operations.
TrigonometryA branch of mathematics that studies relationships between side lengths and angles of triangles.
StatisticsThe discipline that concerns the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data.
ProbabilityA measure of the likelihood of an event to occur.
VariableA symbol used to represent an unspecified member of a set.
FunctionA relation between a set of inputs and a set of permissible outputs where each input is related to exactly one output.
DerivativeThe rate at which a function is changing at any given point.
IntegralA mathematical object that can be interpreted as an area or a generalization of area.
MatrixA rectangular array of numbers, symbols, or expressions, arranged in rows and columns.
VectorAn object that has both a magnitude and a direction.
TheoremA statement that has been proven on the basis of previously established statements.
AxiomA statement or proposition which is regarded as being established, accepted, or self-evidently true.
Prime NumberA natural number greater than 1 that is not a product of two smaller natural numbers.
IntegerA number that can be written without a fractional component.
Rational NumberA number that can be expressed as the quotient or fraction of two integers.
Irrational NumberA real number that cannot be expressed as a ratio of integers.
HypotenuseThe longest side of a right-angled triangle, opposite the right angle.
LogarithmThe inverse function to exponentiation.
