Glossary#

Math is a massive area of study and it can be difficult to remember all the different terminology that we use throughout the different branches. As I was creating the website, I realized that it might be incredibly valuable to have a glossary of the different words and their exact meanings.

Equation Some test definition to fill space
Addition Addition is the process of combining two numbers into a single number.
Subtraction Subtraction is the process of taking one number from another to produce a new number.
Multiplication Multiplication is the process of combining two factors into a single number.
Division Division is the process of dividing a whole number by another whole number.
Algebra A branch of mathematics dealing with symbols and the rules for manipulating those symbols.
Geometry A branch of mathematics concerned with the properties and relations of points, lines, surfaces, solids, and higher dimensional analogs.
Calculus The mathematical study of continuous change, in the same way that geometry is the study of shape and algebra is the study of generalizations of arithmetic operations.
Trigonometry A branch of mathematics that studies relationships between side lengths and angles of triangles.
Statistics The discipline that concerns the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data.
Probability A measure of the likelihood of an event to occur.
Variable A symbol used to represent an unspecified member of a set.
Function A relation between a set of inputs and a set of permissible outputs where each input is related to exactly one output.
Derivative The rate at which a function is changing at any given point.
Integral A mathematical object that can be interpreted as an area or a generalization of area.
Matrix A rectangular array of numbers, symbols, or expressions, arranged in rows and columns.
Vector An object that has both a magnitude and a direction.
Theorem A statement that has been proven on the basis of previously established statements.
Axiom A statement or proposition which is regarded as being established, accepted, or self-evidently true.
Prime Number A natural number greater than 1 that is not a product of two smaller natural numbers.
Integer A number that can be written without a fractional component.
Rational Number A number that can be expressed as the quotient or fraction of two integers.
Irrational Number A real number that cannot be expressed as a ratio of integers.
Hypotenuse The longest side of a right-angled triangle, opposite the right angle.
Logarithm The inverse function to exponentiation.
